Decorating With Barnwood
If you have ever been given the opportunity to collect barnwood from an old demolished barn, you may want to snatch it up! There are so many cool decorating projects that you can do with the wood. The beauty of using the barnwood is that the natural aging and weathering creates a great gray finish. All you really need to do is clean the wood by lightly sanding and wiping down. I like to use a mixture of water and bleach. If you are going to use the wood for furniture, you may also want to coat it with a flat or satin finish polyurethane.
We were fortunate to get enough barnwood planks to cover an entire wall in our basement game room. Our barnwood wall adds a lot of texture and is a nice focal point for the space.
There are many other ideas for decorating with barnwood, however, that don’t require quite as much of the wood.
Here are just a few:
Do it yourself headboard projects are extremely popular. Creating a headboard out of barnwood is perfect for a rustic or shabby chic style bedroom. I love the added painted words “awake my soul” on this example.
I just love this barnwood valance! The contrast of the weathered look is stunning against the soft blue draperies and I love the chipping white paint left on.
I just had to show this rustic dresser for inspiration. With all of the dresser makeovers that get done by creative do it yourself-ers, I just knew this would spark an interest. Think about replacing just the drawer faces, on the right dresser, with barnwood for a rustic makeover. I have a dresser in mind at my house if I come across some more wood!
This wood is almost camouflaged as barnwood with all of the fun colors! A little paint can change the whole look of a project.
Some other common decorating uses for barnwood are signs, picture frames and wall hook bases. Do you have an idea for decorating with barnwood? We would love to have you share it!
