How To Decorate A Bulletin Board With Old License Plates

When you need some cool and funky decor for a boys bedroom, a simple project is to decorate a plain bulletin board. Any plain bulletin board, for that matter, can be made fun with a little embellishing. In fact, my idea using license plates would be kind of cool in a garage. It would be a decorative way to keep repair or maintenance notes. I’ll show you how to decorate a bulletin board with old license plates and DIY wing nut thumbtacks.

To start with, I painted the natural wood frame black. Then, I took three similar old license plates and overlapped them at the top of the board. When I was happy with the positions, I glued them in place with E6000 craft glue. The old plates are heavier than new plates so I used a strong glue.

I could have stopped there and probably should have. But, sometimes I just keep going with the decorating. So, I decided to add some old chain links to the bottom of the frame.

Since I wanted to keep with a rustic industrial look, I found a few fun black pieces from my husband’s junk drawer. An old section of chain and an allen wrench worked perfectly for embellishments. I just glued them to the frame with tacky glue.

Since I didn’t want to give him ordinary thumb tacks for this fun and funky bulletin board, I made him some.  I simply glued some wing nuts and other nuts to flat thumb tacks with tacky glue. It’s a simple way to get decorative thumbtacks. See how I also made rustic chic thumbtacks by adding branch slices and a little glitz to plain tacks.

This is a very simple way to decorate a bulletin board and a fun way to display some antique license plates at the same time.  And, as a bonus you can clean out a junk drawer.
