How To Make A Pillow Out Of A Sweater

Every time I go into Pottery Barn and see the cable knit sweater pillows, I want to grab one. Of course, then I see the price tag and have second thoughts.  They look so cozy on a sofa, for the winter season, that it really is tempting.  But…there is a budget friendly alternative! I’ll show you how to make a pillow out of a sweater.

You can easily recycle an old sweater and make a pillow yourself.

I had actually done this before with a pillow that was a combination of an old sweater and leather.  See the upcycled sweater tutorial here.  However, this time I wanted to do a more cozy version that I could set out for the holidays.

Luckily, I didn’t even need to go to the thrift store to find a sweater to use.  I had plenty that I needed to recycle right in my closet!

The first thing that I needed to do was to cut the neck and sleeves off, leaving a nice square section.

I used a yardstick to make a straight line just under the arm pits.

Now I just had to turn this square inside out and stitch a seam at the cut edge.  Once I had the seam stitched, I inserted my throw pillow.  Instead or purchasing a pillow form, I reused an old throw pillow that I was no longer using.

Finally, I hand-stitched the bottom ribbing together and I was done…..almost!  Since I also wanted it to look a little more holiday-ish, I tied some large sections of cream yarn and jute string around the pillow in a gift package style.

If I decide that I want to put the pillow in another room and coordinate the colors, all I have to do is switch out the ribbon/yarn trim.  This is probably the easiest way to make a pillow quickly and affordably that I can think of!
