Half of the fun of giving gifts at Christmas is in the wrapping. The more creative and festive that you are with your packaging, the more anticipation seems to be given to the recipient. You don’t have to spend a fortune to give a package that stands out. Gift tags are a part of the gift wrap that are easy to make yourself. You could even get away with plain brown kraft paper, as your gift wrap, when you go with a decorative tag.
There are so many options and different embellishments that you can use to decorate your tags. You can use items that you already have on hand for further cost savings. I am going to show you three Christmas gift tags that I just made real quick that are all very different from each other but each one is just as festive as the next.
The first one is this tag that is reminiscent of a cozy argyle holiday sweater. I used some patterned craft paper that I already had, a couple of buttons from my old button bin and a thick piece of woolly yarn to tie the tag off with to match the sweater theme.
First I traced a plain manila gift tag onto my craft paper and cut it out. I punched a hole in the top to match the hole in the manila tag. Then, I sprayed the back of the paper with spray adhesive and adhered it to the front of the manilla tag. Using the same craft paper, I cut out a triangular piece of the argyle pattern and sprayed the pattern side with the spray adhesive. I covered a triangular section on the tag with the white side of the paper. This is the section for writing a gift message.
I sewed two of my old buttons onto the white triangle, tying the string at the front. All I had left to do was string a section of green yarn through the top hole and it is ready for a package.
I used paint, snow-tex and a fun sledding charm for this next gift tag. First, I painted the whole manila tag with my favorite color, blissful blue, acrylic paint. Then I cut out a shape of a snow hill out of some white craft paper and glued it to the bottom of the tag with spray adhesive. I added some snow-tex between the paper cut out and the blue paint for a fun added detail. For some further embellishment, I sewed a sledding charm to some holiday ribbon and glued it around the tag with tacky glue. Finally, I strung some hemp string through the top hole to finish it.
This last gift tag is more rustic and vintage. I used vintage sheet music, a rusty bell and some vintage looking typewriter key stickers for the main embellishments. First I cut out the song sheet in the same manner as the first tag. I then glued it to the manila tag with tacky glue. I strung a section of hemp string through the hole at the top and attached a rusty bell to the string by twisting it by the attached wire. Next I tied some raffia around the twisted wire. Finally, I cut out a circle from some tan craft paper and glued it to the bottom of the tag. I used the typewriter key stickers to spell the word “joy” at the top.
Depending on the papers and embellishments that you choose to use, you can have quite a variety of different Christmas gift tags. Just have fun and experiment with what you have.
I like the tags you made. I am going to make some for myself.
I like these – and will try some myself! Thank you!
