At the beginning of every year, I start out feeling really ambitious. I am ready to tackle every cleaning and organizing job that I have! However, that doesn’t mean that I want it to be difficult. I am always looking for smart household tips to get these menial jobs done efficiently and without blowing the budget. After scouring the web, I think I have found some of the best tips to get organized and clean in some surprisingly clever ways.
1. Repair Scratches On Furniture By Rubbing With A Walnut.
Beginning with one of my favorites, this tip by Apartment Therapy works amazingly well! I have tried this on some antique furniture and it really did remove scratches and even blended in a water stain wonderfully.

This simple tip from Far Above Rubies uses the end of a cabinet to hang hard to store items. It’s just a matter of attaching hooks or a peg board to the top and you have instant hanging storage.
3. Store Kitchen Wraps Inside Pantry Door With Plastic Self Adhesive Hooks.

4. Use An Egg Carton To Store Condiments Upside Down.
Here is an idea by Alton Brown to make squirting those condiments so much easier! It can be so frustrating to have to wait for that painfully slow stream to make it out of the bottle when stored normally.
5. Use Pool Noodles To Hold Paint Brushes
Here is a very clever tip from Instructables. This is one that I will definitely want to use for my next painting project. Dealing with dripping brushes is always a hassle and this is a great way to keep the mess under control.

11 Magnolia Lane has a great idea for making use of the inside of a cabinet door as well as giving it plenty of style. The chalkboards are handy for planning purposes and won’t get lost in a pile of papers!

7. Remove An Embedded Splinter Painlessly With Baking Soda.
This tip is a must to know about if you’ve ever had one of those deep slivers that you just can’t get out with tweezers. I found it on WikiHow and it’s simply making a paste with baking soda and water and applying to affected area. The skin swells up and pushes the sliver out!
8. Glue A Thumbtack To A Clothespin For A Bulletin Board Clip.
With clips, like these from Driven By Décor, it’s much easier to hang your treasures without causing any damage.
9. Unshrink Clothes With Three Easy Steps.
It’s amazing what a little hair conditioner can do for your clothes! This tip from Huffington Post shows how to unshrink your clothes by simply soaking them in a solution of 1 tablespoon hair conditioner and warm water. Then, all you need to do is stretch the item back out. The conditioner helps to loosen the clothing fibers for stretchability.
10. Use Painters Tape As A Guide For Hanging Pictures.
Home Star Staging shows how to hang photos right the first time. By using painters tape and a level, you can mark where the nails go by stretching a length of tape across the entire back of the picture. Then, just punch a hole through the tape at the center of the hangers. Finally, adhere the tape to the wall. Hammer in those nails through the holes that you punched!
11. Place A Rubberband Across A Paint Can To Wipe Paint Brush On.
Along those same lines of non-messy painting, a rubberband across a paint can is a must. This tip from Sarah Glynn almost makes me want to start another painting project now.

15. Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh With Scented Toilet Paper Rolls.
A tip from Cooking With Elise will keep bathrooms smelling fresh. Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the cardboard tube of the toilet paper roll. Every time the roll is turned, the room is refreshened with the scent.
