At the beginning of every year, I start out feeling really ambitious. I am ready to tackle every cleaning and organizing job that I have! That doesn’t mean that I want it to be difficult though. I am always looking for smart household tips to get these menial jobs done efficiently and without blowing the budget. After scouring the web, I think I have found some of the best tips to get organized and clean in some surprisingly clever ways.
1. Repair Scratches On Furniture By Rubbing With A Walnut.
This tip by Apartment Therapy works amazingly well! I have tried this on some antique furniture and it really did remove scratches and even blended in a water stain wonderfully.

4. Remove An Embedded Splinter Painlessly With Baking Soda.
This tip is a must to know about if you’ve ever had one of those deep slivers that you just can’t get out with tweezers. I’m not a fan of needles or any other sharp objects for trying to dig those buggers out so this tip would be a lifesaver for me! I found it on WikiHow and it’s simply making a paste with baking soda and water and applying to affected area. The skin swells up and pushes the sliver out, wa-la!
5. Glue A Thumbtack To A Clothespin For A Bulletin Board Clip.
If you’re like me, you like hanging photos on a bulletin board but you don’t want to push a pin through grandma’s head! With clips, like these from Driven By Décor, it’s much easier to hang your treasures without causing any damage.

8. Remove Dents In Carpet, Caused By Furniture, With Ice Cubes.
This household tip from WikiHow will definitely come in handy anytime a little furniture rearranging is wanted. Those unsightly carpets dents can easily be taken care of with the simple use of ice cubes.
9. Use An Egg Carton To Store Condiments Upside Down.
Here is an idea to make squirting those condiments so much easier! It can be so frustrating to have to wait for that painfully slow stream to make it out of the bottle when stored normally. Alton Brown definitely had the right idea here.
10. Unshrink Clothes With Three Easy Steps.
Its amazing what a little hair conditioner can do for your clothes! This tip from Huffington Post shows how you can unshrink your clothes by simply soaking them in a solution of 1 tablespoon hair conditioner and warm water and then stretching the item back out. The conditioner helps to loosen the clothing fibers back out.
11. Use Painters Tape As A Guide For Hanging Pictures.
Home Star Staging has the right idea for hanging photos right the first time. By using painters tape and a level, you can mark where the nails go by stretching a length of tape across the entire back of the picture. A level will help you to make sure the tape is straight. Then, just punch a hole through the tape exactly where the nails will go. Finally, take the tape and adhere it to the wall. Hammer in those nails through the holes that you punched!
12.Use Pool Noodles To Hold Paint Brushes
Here is a very clever tip from Instructables. This is one that I will definitely want to use for my next painting project. Dealing with dripping brushes is always a hassle and this is a great way to keep the mess under control.
13. Place A Rubberband Across A Paint Can To Wipe Paint Brush On.
Along those same lines of non-messy painting, a rubberband across a paint can is a must. Being able to wipe a brush at the center of a can instead of at the side of the can will prevent those messy drips and filling of paint at the rim. This tip from Sarah Glynn almost makes me want to start another painting project now.
14. Keep Your Bathroom Smelling Fresh With Scented Toilet Paper Rolls.
A tip from Cooking With Elise will keep bathrooms smelling fresh. Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the cardboard tube of the toilet paper roll. Every time the roll is turned, the room is refreshened with the scent.
