Labeling is such a great idea for organization. Having decorative labels is even better! Of all the materials to put a label on, burlap gives the most texture and warmth. I’m going to show you how to make burlap labels using a variety of techniques.
Burlap Label Ideas
There are lots of ways to use burlap for labels. For most of the ideas it’s best to use a tight weave burlap for a solid background.
Use Burlap And Buttons
A fun way to spell out letters on burlap is to glue on buttons. This obviously works best for larger bins. I created labels for a couple of large galvanized tins this way. Since they were going to be used to hold Christmas decorations or gifts, I simply labeled them Joy and Hope.
For my first tub with burlap, I used dark buttons to give a real nice contrast. I like the way the word really stands out. I used tacky glue to adhere the buttons in place. When the glue was dry, I used Mod Podge matte finish to adhere the burlap to the tin tub. First I applied the Mod Podge to the back of the burlap and then set the burlap in place on the tin. Next, I applied another layer of Mod Podge over the front of the burlap to secure and seal it.
For a more subtle look, I used the light vintage buttons on the burlap for my other tin. I love how these buttons catch the light for a chic sparkle. The large dark button at the top center gives just a little contrast to the whole design.
Spell Out Words With Yarn On Burlap
Since yarn is easy to form into letters, it’s a great thing to pair with burlap for a label. For this stocking label, I glued a rectangle section of burlap to the top of a stocking. To cover the rough edges, I trimmed the burlap with yarn by gluing the yarn with fabric glue. Finally, I glued a monogram formed with the same yarn. You can also use white twine or embroidery floss for the letters.
Use A Marker To Label A Burlap Tag
The burlap label tags are perfect for labeling wire baskets. Just write out your label with a chalk marker or sharpie on a section of burlap.
Paint On Burlap
To add some color to your burlap, make painted burlap labels. Paint the background a fun color and then label with a paint marker.
Print On Burlap
If you want a more intricate design or fancy lettering, you can also print on burlap. There are a couple of ways to do this. Either use your printer or transfer an image using transfer paper.
Hi Renee,
What a cute idea! The look of burlap has always been a fav of mine and I can’t wait to get some chalkboard paint. The ideas are endless! Thanks!

I never would have thought to use the buttons for the words but it’s awesome!!
