Easy Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas
Over the past year and a half, I have posted several different ideas that I have used for decorating in a shabby chic style. Most of my ideas come from incorporating vintage items that I have picked up at either flea markets or antique stores.
Some of these finds are used as is and others are re-purposed or up-cycled into new and useful home decor.
I wanted to highlight some of the favorite shabby chic decorating ideas, that I have shared, and also add a few more clever ways to decorate that I have found from others.
Favorite Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas:
A very popular item to use in shabby chic decorating is old windows. The frames can be used with or without the glass and used simply or re-purposed into a message board or photo holder. I used this frame on it’s own to make a very simple statement. Just clipping a sprig of dried flowers to the frame, with a vintage clip, was all I needed to accent a wall in my bedroom. For a collection of other fun ideas with windows, check out my post on decorating with old windows.
I brought a picket fence inside to add some shabby interest to a wall in my office. It originally was a faded and naturally distressed red fence but a thin coat of white paint brightened it up a bit to fit in with my color scheme. I brushed lightly over the bare wood parts to keep the distressed look.
An example of up-cycling something old into useful shabby chic decor, is with this vintage heat register. I simply cleaned it up and made some coordinating clips out of clothespins for a fun photo clip board. For details on the clips and a look at my whole display, including the old crate base, check out my post on trash to treasure.
Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas From Others:
A fun and easy idea for bringing in some natural chic is to use branches. These birch branches, attached at ceiling level, make quite a statement combined with the glitzy light fixture. I also like to incorporate birch wherever I can and have placed branches in a heavy container behind a sofa to add some height and texture.
Old books are an easy go to item for shabby chic decorating. I have stacks of them all over my house! This example, displayed in a fun vintage side table, shows that it works even in a dining area.
I hope you have found some new inspiration as you go about your shabby chic decorating!
Happy Decorating!
